For Dr. Carroll Van West’s “Essentials of Historic Preservation and Cultural Resource Management” class (HIST 7610) in the Fall 2015 semester I worked on the National Register of Historic Places nomination for FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. My primary task was to write the historical narrative starting after Rick Hall’s work with Atlantic Records (Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin) and bring the period of significance to current times. You can read the National Register of Historic Places nomination here. The National Register of Historic Places added Fame Studios to its registry on November 29, 2016.
I will be writing case studies for both FAME Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio for my dissertation, as both operate as an active recording facility and tourist attraction.
